Loretta Lynch's Justice Department worked with the media to try to keep the "tarmac meeting" secret.

That much is clear after reviewing the hundreds of pages of documents released Friday by the American Center for Law & Justice, which had previously sued the Justice Department for failing to provide these documents following a Freedom of Information Act request. The FBI, then under the direction of James Comey, responded that there were no "responsive" records available pertaining to the June 27, 2016, meeting between the then-attorney general and President Bill Clinton just days before the conclusion of the FBI's investigation into his wife, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee.

In one of the email chains obtained by the ACLJ, FBI and DOJ officials discuss "talkers"—talking points—about the "casual, unscheduled meeting between former president Bill Clinton and the AG," but those talking points are all redacted. In another, the FBI approaches the DOJ to ask for "guidance" on how to respond to media requests regarding the encounter. Those documents were also heavily redacted.

ACLJ's Jordan Sekulow wrote:

It is clear that there were multiple records within the FBI responsive to our request and that discussions regarding the surreptitious meeting between then AG Lynch and the husband of the subject of an ongoing FBI criminal investigation reached the highest levels of the FBI.

However, on October 21, 2016, the Comey FBI replied to our legal demands that “No records responsive to your request were located.” This is in direct contravention to the law, and we are preparing further legal action to force the FBI to come clean and turn over ALL documents related to this matter to us in a timely manner.

The Comey or the FBI would be less than forthright about the meeting is hardly a surprise. But neither is the impression that members of the liberal mainstream media were working in conjunction with the DOJ to kill the story in its earliest stages. The ACLJ shared on email from The Washington Post's Matt Zapotosky suggests his goal wasn't to get to the truth, but rather, "hoping I can put it (the story) to rest."

Sekulow also wrote:

The same Washington Post reporter, interacting with the DOJ spin team, implemented specific DOJ requests to change his story to make the Attorney General appear in a more favorable light. A New York Times reporter apologetically told the Obama DOJ that he was being “pressed into service” to have to cover the story. As the story was breaking, DOJ press officials stated, “I also talked to the ABC producer, who noted that they aren’t interested, even if Fox runs with it.”

Two days after the meeting, DOJ officials in a chain of emails that includes emails to Attorney General Lynch herself stated that the media coverage of the meeting “looks like all or most are FOX” and that “CBS . . . just says a few lines about the meeting.”

The redactions, however, are particularly problematic—or, perhaps, enlightening—as their justification doesn't match what we were told about the "tarmac meeting," nor do they make much sense given the participants, or the timing of the meeting. But, according to the FBI, the talking points were exempt from the FOIA law because they were part of a "deliberative process."

Sekulow, calling the redactions "absurd" promised more legal action to bring the truth to light:

We will be taking these redactions back to federal court. The law is on our side. We will keep pressing on with our investigation of former Attorney General Lynch until we get to the bottom of this.
